I Love the 80s

When I got a request for 80's cookies right before I closed for maternity leave, how could I say no?!

I'm a child of the 80's and definitely loved rocking the mix tapes on my boombox :)  I was never allowed to watch MTV when I was little, which of course meant that I watched as much as possible every time I was at a friend's house ;)

I also REALLY loved my Nintendo.  The old school one, no Super Nintendo over here.  Mario and Tetris were two of my faves, along with Mega Man.  Remember him?!  No cookies of him this time, but there were some Donkey Kong and Zelda in this 30th birthday package :)

Video Game Cookies

These cookies were favors for a video game-themed bar mitzvah.  They were all of my fave characters:  Pac-Man, Mario and Angry Birds along with Wii and Xbox controllers.

13th Birthday Cookies

These cookies were created for a 13 year old birthday boy.  Jack plays football for his local township team and, like any 13 year old boy, likes to play video games!  So we decided on a variety of footballs, jerseys in his team colors, XBox controllers, and happy birthday cookies for his cookie gift.

Skyrim cookies

Anybody recognize these cookies?

Even if you aren't a gamer, you probably recognize the center logo from all of the video game commercials.  These are Skyrim cookies.  The center is the game logo, and the viking masks are one of the more recognizable images from the game.

Here's the full collection of cookies:

The package included the Skyrim dragon logo and 3 of the masks that the characters wear in the game.  My husband loves this game, and I'm sure he could get all technical and tell you exactly what each of them are and who wears them and what they do.  But umm...he's sleeping right now, so you'll have to be satisfied with my rudimentary explanation :)  My video game skills never really evolved beyond Super Nintendo.

These were a lot of fun to make and I hope they enjoyed the cookies!

Super Mario Brothers!

I was a big fan of Super Mario Brothers growing up.  I still remember when I got my old NES system for Christmas.  I don't think I was quite as excited as this kid, but I was pretty freakin' excited.  By far, the coolest game was Mario Brothers.  At least numbers 1 and 3, what the heck happened to #2?  That one was weird...
Anyway, I digress.

The point is, I love old Nintendo games.  They totally bring me back to my youth.  So, that being said, I wanted to keep these cookies in the old school 8-bit style.

Ironically, these were ordered by one of my very best friends from grade school.  I'm pretty sure whenever we were too lazy to walk to the local market for candy and pickles (weird I know, but true), or didn't feel like setting up the board for Mall Madness, we were playing NES (OK, or watching MTV, but don't tell my Mom that).

To make these cookies, I knew I was going to need my KopyKake projector, so I set about looking for the perfect images to use.  Luckily, my husband is very knowledgeable about video games (wow, I never thought I would use the word "luckily" in that sentence), so he helped me find a Super Mario Bros 3 sprite sheet online that literally has an image of every character in every possible pose.  The hardest part was choosing which images to use!

After I finally choose 12 images, I blew up them up in Photoshop to give them the signature grainy 8-bit quality.  Then I used my KopyKake projector to trace the outlines onto the cookies using black royal icing and a PME #1.5 tip.  I chose a blue background to mimic the background color of the game.
